“Then you win.”

“First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they write four apoplectic blog posts in 24 hours disparaging minute subtleties in your choice of font. Then you win.”

Googler DeWit Clinton wrote this on Google+ today, and it was referencing John Gruber‘s (Apple enthusiast, developer, and blogger) ridiculous night of bashing the new Android font featured in Ice Cream Sandwich. I saw all those posts the night before, and I found it funny that the font was all Gruber had opinions about. I agreed with Clinton right away, but something else came up today that proves this point. The Next Iteration of the Nexus: What’s in a Name?

As we get closer to the postponed Samsung-Google event that will finally unveil Ice Cream Sandwich and the lead phone that it’ll release on, there have been way to many rumors to keep track of. Photos, videos, screen captures, spec leaks, and so much more have had all the fans whirling in a daze trying to figure out what the next big phone will be. We even got a little video from Samsung themselves, which turned some heads due to the beauty of the phone they teased. There’s no doubt that the next few weeks will include even more of these rumors, but there’s one that’s been constantly argued – the name of the phone. I’ve consistently stood by the name Nexus Prime, but there have been a few other names, like Droid Prime, Nexus 3, Nexus Galaxy, and of course the name in question – Galaxy Nexus. As of recent, it’s been this last one that I truly believe is the lead phone’s name. Read more

AndroidTO is just around the corner!

Last year, I attended an event in Toronto run by a few great, local technologists. In it’s debut year, they piled in hundreds of attendees including developers and enthusiasts and had an informative group of presenters. In short, it was an exciting experience that was, needless to say, heavily memorable. At the time, I was only in my early stages of understanding Android development, but was a huge fan of the platform. Over the year, I’ve begun to understand the platform a lot better, both from a developer and user perspective, and a lot of it is because of that conference and the people I met. Along with this growth, I’ve also gotten to know the group that created the event from their own bare hands – a team that’s passionate about technology and wants to do nothing but push it forward. These values are necessary in an industry that needs growth in our local area. On October 26th, AndroidTO will, for one day, bring groundbreaking technologies to the forefront, and will inspire for days to come. Read more

Thoughts on the iPhone 4S

During and after the Apple event today I’ve been watching my Google+ and Twitter stream and I heard it all – disappointment, hate, happiness, and the regular claims of the world changing and everything about everything being absolutely revolutionized. I followed the live stream on a few sites and got the gist of what was going on. But unlike a lot of people, I wasn’t disappointed – I was, in some ways, impressed. Believe it or not, I do want Apple to push the limits and I do think Apple is capable of doing so. I also show no regret in saying that iOS 5 is behind the times standing next to Android. But the iPhone 4S is all the industry needs from Apple on a hardware perspective. I know you love to hear me rant about Apple – I love to do it myself. But face it: today, Apple did a lot of right things. Read more

Missing the Point: Android, Linux, and a Standard Ecosystem

I find that a lot of people still miss the point about what Android as an open source project is. I’ve talked about it in the past, but it seems that there’s some holes that I still haven’t explained. I was reading an article that talked about Android being the “new Linux” and why it’s a bad thing (I suggest reading this article first) and I had a hard time agreeing with majority of what was being argued. The author of this article seems to not really understand the major differences. He starts by making a connection between the fall of desktop Linux and Android and then goes on to talk about Amazon. But in all honesty, I think he misses the point. The game is very different with Android, and there are some very key factors that will make it’s destiny different than Linux and make it a strong standard. Time to break this down. Read more
